Winter

You said you could not follow.

I said I couldn’t go.

We both drew breath in silence,

While it began to snow.

I asked when spring was coming.

You said, “Far too soon.”

The frost began a’biting

And quickly rose the moon.

The night began to thicken.

The stars grew few and dim.

A vision fell upon me;

T’was bittersweet and grim.

I could not stay to warm you.

You didn’t feel the cold.

The black closed fast around us.

My hope began to fold.

I kissed you once to feel you

Then forged into the dark

But unbeknownst to you,

I left you with a spark.
